They're costly and they end up getting you into a pile of financial trouble. But somehow mortgage lenders out there are getting away with offering high mortgage rates to unknowing victims who purchase their first home. Here are ten reasons how you can avoid getting scammed with high mortgage rates:

• Check out a mortgage lender's references. Ask family, friends, and co-workers their experiences with mortgage lenders and their satisfaction with their mortgage rates. Were they happy or did they feel cheated in the end? Doing a little research never hurts and might help avoid a potential financial blunder that can turn out costly for you.
• Play dress up and transform yourself into a mortgage rates police officer. Get in contact with the Better Business Bureau and do a little investigating and check out their complaints department.
• Don't procrastinate. Get your paper work done on time and don't give them an opportunity to fix their mortgage rates into higher ones for whatever reason. Hold the ball in your court and in your possession.
